The purpose of this program is to equip and empower in-service teachers to work effectively with neurodivergent student populations and increase their inclusion in general education classrooms. This non-degree professional certificate offers the latest research and evidence-based practices in multisensory structured literacy for teachers who serve students with dyslexia.
Introduction to teaching beginning reading, spelling and handwriting, focusing on the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching basic language skills.
Testing procedures and data collection to evaluate student growth and effectiveness of instructional approach.
Seminar includes lectures and a practicum. Teacher candidates tutor two children per semester with supervision and evaluation provided by course instructors.
The University of La Verne will become the first university in the State of California to offer this certification to teachers, thereby helping to address a significant equity issue for students who have been unable to access skilled support for dyslexia.
This program runs for two semesters and spans over the course of one year.
